Exposure travels through people. A principal who has been careful about their own information remains visible through the people they live with, work with, share an address with, and are otherwise connected to. The records that hold a family together as a unit, including the shared addresses, the school enrolments, the property holdings, the directorships held in common, the social photography that places several family members in one image, all combine into something larger than any single individual's record.
A spouse appears on the same property records, the same insurance schedules, the same household registrations, and many of the same press pieces as the principal. A child's school is named in directories, school magazines, and the social photography of the school's events. A trustee appears alongside the principal on filings related to family vehicles, foundations, and structures. A senior staff member is named on the household's contractual relationships and, in some cases, in press coverage of the family's events. Each of these is a route through which the family's wider information can be reached.
The interconnections mean that protecting a family requires attending to several individual records as a single coherent picture. The desk that holds the principal's information in a bounded position has done a partial job if the spouse's records, the children's records, and the staff's records each individually expose what the principal's records do not.
the desk treats the family as the unit of protection for the principal who chooses this approach. The mapping covers every family member who is materially exposed through their association with the principal. The watch runs across all of them. The actions taken are coordinated so that an adjustment to one family member's record does not, by inference, reveal something about another's.
The work does not extend to the family's accounts, credentials, or private information. The desk does not become a confidant to the family. It does not handle the personal correspondence of family members. It does not become involved in the family's relationships, finances, or domestic arrangements. The line is the same as with the principal: the work is in the information layer that surrounds the family, not in the family's private life.
A fuller account is set out in the desk's work on protecting identity for private individuals and families.
