Why the desk keeps its detection systems private

The desk operates its own monitoring infrastructure rather than licensing it to others. The choice is deliberate. A general-purpose monitoring product, however well built, is shaped by what the largest segment of its customers needs. The needs of private individuals and families differ in ways that do not survive translation into a commercial product.

The first reason is coverage. Commercial monitoring products tend to cover the most widely used sources because that is what most customers expect. The sources that matter for private exposure (regional registers, slow-moving archives, the secondary press, the trade publications that read significant filings) are often covered shallowly or not at all because the demand for them is small. The desk's infrastructure is configured for the sources that bear on its clients, not for the sources that drive product sales.

The second reason is calibration. A commercial product is calibrated for an average customer. Its alerting thresholds, its categorisation of significance, its presentation of findings are designed for the general case. The desk's clients are not the general case, and the calibration that serves them well is different from what a product can offer.

The third reason is discretion. A commercial monitoring product creates a customer relationship that is, in itself, a record. The product provider knows what is being watched, by whom, with what frequency. The relationship is part of the picture the customer presents to the world. A desk that operates its own infrastructure does not generate that record.

The fourth reason is correction. When a commercial product produces a wrong result, the user has limited ability to investigate the cause and correct it. When the desk's own systems produce a wrong result, the desk can investigate, identify the cause, and correct it within the same organisation. The cycle is faster and the result is more reliable.

The infrastructure is not for sale and not for licence. It does the work the desk does for its clients, and that is what it exists for.
